Thanks to our friends at The Pet Project for helping us research and put together this informative letter for all participants and volunteers who may have questions regarding the Canine Influenza:
Hey folks! Something that's probably on everyone's mind right now is that pesky Canine Influenza, otherwise known as dog flu. What does that mean for me and my pet for The Fast and Furry, you ask? We do not want to alarm you, and many of us are bringing our own dogs, but we do want you to have all the information you need to make your own decision regarding your pet.
Well, we talked to veterinarians from Caravan Vet, St. Francis Animal Hospital, Ark Animal Hospital, Grand Ave Veterinary and Lake Harriet Veterinary clinics. They all had some great advice, but what it boils down to is your own comfort level and some common sense precautions.
You should know that as of right now, according to Grand Ave Vet, there are no confirmed or suspected cases of Canine Influenza in the Twin Cities. For the largest percentage of dogs, as with people, the flu is lousy, but it's often not a serious danger.
We'll give you the facts first. Here's what we know, thanks to Dr. Christa at Caravan Vet:
If you have a a dog under one year, a dog who is "older" (breed and size dependent), who is dealing with any other chronic disease state (allergies, chronic GI disease, Diabetes, arthritis, etc) or who is on immunosuppressant drugs (steroids, including chronic use of ear or topical skin medications, atopica/cyclosporine or chemotherapy of any kind) I recommend that they not attend this event. If you have recently traveled outside the metro area or if your dog seems ill in any way, please keep them home while you attend the event.
Please be advised that if your pet is showing the following symptoms, that they should be seen by a veterinarian:
We're planning on having a great event on Saturday filled with dogs and their people. In order to minimize the risk of transmission, we'll be providing you with your own disposable (and biodegradable) bowl for the event. Still wondering if you should bring your own dog? Reach out to your own veterinarian and ask their advice.
We would very much like to thank everyone at Caravan Vet, St. Francis Animal Hospital, Grand Avenue Veterinary, Ark Animal Hospital, and Lake Harriet Vet for taking time out of their day to talk to us about making our event as safe as can be and for taking good care of our furry friends. THANK YOU!!
The Pet Project Team
We have been carefully watching the news about canine influenza that has been detected in dogs in the Midwest. While no cases have been confirmed, there is some great information out there from the University of Minnesota that you can read to help keep your pet safe and healthy.
I encourage all participants who will be bringing their dog to read through this information:
University of Minnesota Center for Animal Health and Food Safety: Canine Influenza
If you have concerns about potential for canine influenza and how you can protect your dog, we recommend having a discussion with your veterinarian about risks and possible vaccines that are available and safe for your dog.
While the risk is low, we are asking that anyone who believes their dog may be sick (coughing, sneezing, diarrhea, etc), please leave your dog at home.
We will also have bottled water at our water stops in addition to large water bowls if you prefer to not have your dog drink water from a shared bowl.
The St. Paul Parks and Recreation Department has been working very hard this spring to make some major improvements to both the roads and paths that run through Lilydale and Harriet Island Regional Park. But due to these construction projects along our race route, the 2015 events will likely not be able to be USATF certified. We apologize for this late change but if the opportunity to certify the course presents itself, we will complete the certification. But if that does not happen, we do promise that both the 8K and 5K courses will be measured for accurate distance.
The 8K and 5K start on Dr Justus Ohage Blvd and head out and back along Water Street.
Run events will still be professionally chip-timed.
Save yourself some time on race morning and check all the great running/walking products available at Mill City Running by picking up your race packet and shirt at Thursday, May 28th.
Share your online fundraising page with your Facebook friends and tag Fast and the Furry 8K and 5K9 and you will have a chance to win 2 tickets to Brave New Workshop Comedy Theatre in Minneapolis.
